Orange at the Regional Dressage Championships

Orange at the Regional Dressage Championships

Alison and Orange took part in the British Dressage Regional Championships this week.

Orange, competing as Devon Venture, achieved enough points at elementary level to qualify for the regional championships before Alison started her mammoth tour of the country this spring.

With an early time of 9.40am, Alison chose to stay over at Kingston Maurward College the night before. Former working student Jana arrived on Monday morning for a holiday at The Horse Place and was immediately recruited as groom for the championships. Orange was washed groomed and plaited the evening before and everything was ready.

On the morning of her test, Alison was uncharacteristically nervous. Thankfully, Jana was on hand to make sure Orange was looking his best while Alison read the test sheet 100 times over and declared that her goal for the day was to score 60%.

Orange as always took everything in his stride, performing a calm, relaxed and accurate test. The championships meant nothing to him. After returning Orange to his stable until the end of the class, Alison went to look at the scoreboard. The expression on her face said it all – 62.6%. Not bad for one of, if not the oldest horse in the competition at 20 years.

Orange is now competing regularly in Medium classes and Alison has said her goal now is to compete him at Advanced Medium before he retires. Watch this space….

"There is something about this place where you can be immersed and surrounded by great horsemanship. Live it, breath it, watch it, feel it, getting away from usual distractions, and laughs, did I mention the laughing? I for one will be back many times."
