Directions to The Horse Place, East Milford Farm, Hartland, EX39 6EA

From the North or East

  • M5 Junction 27
  • A361 to Barnstaple then follow
  • A39 towards Bude
  • After approx 20 miles you will come to a mini roundabout signed right for Clovelly
  • Go straight on to stay on the A39


Horseboxes and Trailers (be wary of using satnav as some roads unsuitable)

  • Ignore the first 2 turnings to Hartland
  • After 2-3 miles you will come to Bursdon Moor – open moorland bordered with forestry on the left
  • At the top of the hill on the sharp left hand bend take sharp turn right signed for Elmscott and go over cattle grid.
  • Skip to directions below from cattle grid


For Cars Only (this route is not suitable for horseboxes or trailers)


  • Ignore the first turning to Hartland, continue for approx 2 miles
  • Turn right onto the B3248 signed for Hartland
  • After approx 1 mile turn left at the white thatched cottage (Gorrans Down Cross) signed Philham and Elmscott
  • After approx two miles turn left at Lithytree Tile Cross. (triangle of grass at this junction)
  • After approx half a mile turn left (effectively straight on) at Little Barton Cross, signed Elmscott and Welcombe
  • Follow the road sharp left at Kernstone Cross signed Elmscott and Welcombe
  • At the bottom of the hill turn right next to the white thatched cottage, before the bridge
  • Follow the road through sharp left turn over narrow bridge and at the top of the hill, pass the entrance to Speke’s Valley Cottages on the left
  • You will see a White Cottage on the right. The Horse Place is the next concrete drive on the right after the cottage

From the South

  • Take the A39 towards Bideford
  • Through Kilkhampton
  • About 5 miles on, look out for the West Country Inn on the right hand side
  • Take the first left after approx 100 yards and go over cattle grid

From Cattle Grid (this route suitable for all vehicles)

  • Take the first left, in the middle of the moor, signed Elmscott and follow over a second cattle grid.
  • After about 200-300 yards you come to Lutsford Cross, follow the road round a sharp right hand bend.
  • Stay on this road, approx 1.5 miles, all the way to the end to Handsworthy Cross. Postbox opposite.
  • Turn right. Go through Elmscott passing red telephone box on left and then Lower Elmscott Farm on the right. Feels like you are going through a farmyard.
  • Take the next turning left signed Milford.
  • When you get to the farm you will see a derelict stone building on your right.
  • Carry straight on, then round a right hand bend and you will see a white cottage on the left.
  • The Horse Place is the concrete drive on the left before the cottage
  • If in a lorry or trailer, do not go past the white cottage as this leads to a very steep narrow hill.
  • Horseboxes and trailers can drive up the concrete drive to the left of the stables and unload there but you will need to take a look when you get there.
